  18. <p>     Bret Easton Ellis, author of Less Than Zero and a leader of
  19. Manhattan's literary brat pack, has a novel due out next
  20. February that is already causing controversy. Staff members at
  21. Simon & Schuster who have read the manuscript, titled American
  22. Psycho, say it chronicles a young Wall Street banker who is
  23. involved in sexual perversities, murders, mutilations and
  24. diverse other grotesqueries and degradations. Robert Asahina,
  25. Ellis' editor, allows, "It is a book that can be at times
  26. upsetting to read." Some are so upset that they have balked at
  27. working on the novel. But Ellis has his defenders, one of whom
  28. calls the work, a tad redundantly, a bete noire Bonfire of the
  29. Vanities.
